1. Love - The Definition
Love… what does it mean to you?
Funny, that’s not really a common question posed to us. We
usually seek out other sources to answer the question for us.
Every month, many popular magazines come out with articles on
love, how to love, how to be loved, how to make love, and
quizzes and questionnaires to determine whether we are really in
love. In fact, it’s the magazine’s particular article on love that is
often the reason we are compelled to buy it.
Take a moment, slow down, and just think for yourself what love
means to you. Think about it across the broad spectrum of your
life. Family. Friends. Lovers.
It’s pretty amazing, huh?
What It Means To Me
Love: true appreciation and enjoyment of another person. That’s
what I came up with, and it’s changed a number of my
relationships over the last few years.
I used to think of love as purely my commitment to another
person. Saying “I love you” was saying “I’m committed to you,”
but I realized that love and commitment are two different things.
They can certainly go hand in hand, but they don’t have to.
Get Real
How many of us have pretended to love someone? We’ve done it
either because we felt we should love them, we were obligated to
love them, or we wanted to get something out of them. How
about the family members we continue to spend time with in order
to keep the peace, or the friend of yours who “just needs a
friend,” or that date you went on just because the guy or girl was
nice? We have all been committed to being giving to someone in
our lives who we don’t really care for. However, none of these
relationships are founded on respect and genuine excitement for
the person.
Then there are the people we LOVE. I mean, REALLY LOVE. They
walk into the room, our eyes light up, and a smile sweeps across
our faces. We can’t wait to see them, to share our stories and
lives with them, and we listen with excitement as they share
theirs. They are the people we can spend hours upon hours with
laughing, talking, crying, and most importantly, just being
ourselves.
Raise your hand if you know what I mean!
Now, when you put love and commitment together, you can get
something even more amazing. You are able to build on a
relationship and keep it going past anger, sadness, difficult times,
and dry spells.
The Challenge
If you have gotten this far and you do agree with me, I have two
challenges for you. Both can be simple and bring much more
freedom and joy into your life, but both are going to take some
risk on your part!
The first one is to face up to the truth about the people you are
just pretending to be nice to. Of course, I don’t mean to stop
being nice, but admit to yourself how you really feel and you
might want to consider the time and energy that relationship is
worth to you… and what it’s worth to that person. Everyone
deserves the kind of love I spoke about earlier and most people
would not want to find out that someone was being their friend
“just to be nice.” So maybe you’ll be doing them a favor by being
honest, because the truth is, they’ll have the opportunity to stop
wasting their time with you!
The second thing is, when you’ve decided who those people are
that you do love, let them know how you feel. If love is anything
like what I said it is, then it truly is a gift! Give it! It will probably
be easier to do with people like your family and friends… but what
about those love interests? I know you have to risk something to
put your heart out there like that, but if the person welcomes it,
it’s one of the most amazing gifts they could receive. Think about
it: someone’s true appreciation and enjoyment of them. They
make someone’s heart light up. The people in our lives should
know that they have someone who feels this way about them.
Are you up for it?
Remember one more saying before you go:
Live like there’s no tomorrow.
Dance like no one’s watching.
Love like you’ve never been hurt
Happy New Year everyone. See you in January.
