"Man often becomes what he believes himself to be.  If I
keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it
is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of
doing it.  On the contrary, if I shall have the belief that I can
do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it, even if I
may not have it at the beginning."

Mahatma Gandhi

1. Tossing Out Old Beliefs

I would like to expand a bit on last weeks "mini" newsletter.  I
wrote about tossing out old ideas we have about ourselves
and about life that are no longer true or that just don't work.

Sometimes we get set into a certain way of thinking and we
develop ideas about relationships, work, men, women, or our
capabilities that somehow never get changed even though they
contrast reality.  We learn certain ideas from society, from our
parents, or from a time we got hurt or messed up in the past
and we continue to live by these ideas even though they're
not necessarily true for our lives anymore.  We just never
took a step back and examined them objectively.

What Exactly Am I talking About?

Maybe you were the chubby kid in grade school and even
though now you eat healthy, workout, and are far from
overweight, perhaps you are still driven by this old belief.  You
haven't quite woken up, looked yourself in the mirror, and
registered that you are different now.

Or maybe you have always been overweight.  Your parents
were overweight as well and you believe you do not have the
willpower to change your unhealthy habits.  Meanwhile, you
have created a successful career, accomplished numerous
projects, and developed impressive discipline in other areas of
youf life.  Is the willpower really not there?

Society and Our Parents

Our parents grew up in a very different world with very
different values, many of which are wise and beneficial to our
lives, but some that were only systems that were appropriate
for their lifetime.

Maybe you grew up believing that you should never call a guy.
You let this basic belief affect your relationships, but perhaps
the truth is that you would do much better in a relationship
where you were able to contribute freely and be yourself.

Maybe you believe that only skinny women are beautiful, so
you constantly put yourself down and envy your friends or
co-workers.  I bet you can name three beautiful women right
now who are not super skinny.  Why do you judge yourself
with different rules?

Just Some Examples

These are just a few ideas of how our old beliefs often need
to be updated or changed.  We often don't realize how they
might be affecting us and keeping us from moving forward in
our life.

Take some time this week and examine where this rings true
for you.

Here are some fill in the blanks that might help you discover
your hidden beliefs.  Come up with some of your own, and
then take an objective look at them.

All men are___________

All women are___________

Relationships should begin__________

All relationships are____________

Success is______________

Beautiful is______________

I am________________

My parents are_______________

gently offers straightforward advice or suggestions without judgment.
She makes things seem CLEAR to me, for me.  one step at a time."
