1. The Summer and Book Recommendations

This August I have spent a lot of time relaxing. I think
I must be trying to conserve energy for the coming fall.
During June and July I took a psychology course at
City College which took up most of my free time, and
since that ended I have been catching up on books I
have not had time to read. I am on my 4th, and they
all have been wonderful.

The Secret Life of Bees - My mother passed this book
on to me, and I truly enjoyed it. It is not in my opinion
as well written as others in the same genre, but a
delightful page turner nonetheless. I certainly enjoyed
it and could almost not take my eyes off the pages.
It's about a little girl who escapes with her nanny
around the time blacks have gained the right to vote.
Her mother died when she was very young and her
father was an abusive. The two of them travel in
search of information about her mother and end up on
a bee farm in South Carolina. Her self-discovery and
adventures there as a white girl amongst black friends
and family is quite moving.

Nine Hills To Nambonkaha - This is a true story
written by a woman who served two years in the
peace corps in a small African village. She was sent
there to help improve the healthcare of the people.
She was the only American living in this village, and
she does a beautiful and personal compare and contrast
of their culture and value system with America's. She
falls in love with this village and is heartbroken when it
is time for her to leave. I feel such a deeper
understanding of the issues going on in Africa from the
perspective of Africans now that I have read this book.
I highly recommend it.

The Life of Pi - This book was recommended to me by
a reader of this newsletter and a cooking class
attendee. I tend to be a little overwhelmed by book
recommendations, but I decided to pick this one up and
am so glad that I did. It's a long story, but I read it in
a few days. I was captivated by the detail and reality
of the characters. This tale was very well written and
is sure to provide vibrant color to your imagination.

Who's Bible Is It? - This is more of an academic book
written by Jaroslav Pelikan who is Sterling Professor
Emeritus of History at Yale University, and was made
an honory Doctor of Laws by The Jewish Theological
Seminary of America. This is a very interesting book
if you are curious how the bible was put together and
how the church came about...from Judaism to
Christianity, as well as Islam. I believe the writer is a
Christian, however it is difficult to tell with such
unbiased and academic writing. Though I am a
Christian, I am impressed by authors who are able to
write in such a way.

So that has been my summer, besides attending the
great outdoor films on the river. When September
hits I have decided to go back to school full time
while still maintaining my full time coaching services.
It is going to be an exciting end of the year.

"I am constantly finding myself being amazed with
Melissa. She is non-judgmental, supportive, caring,
encouraging, compassionate, open minded, and full of
knowledge. So many times she has been my support
rock. I have had the most pleasurable experience of
working with her as both her client, and as her web
designer. She has supported me in some emotionally
difficult times such as stress when I was in school,
relationships, diet, finances, and business. She has
always listened intently and has provided me with
sound advice. I am unable to think of suitable words
to express the thanks and deep appreciation I have for
her and how she impacted my life."
