1. Clear Skin! Aaaah!

Good morning!

Today I want to tell you a bit about natural remedies
for acne.  You may have read my previous article
about acne written over a year ago, but I have some
new information that I believe is important to share.
It’s funny too because as I was planning this article I
received a message from a new subscriber yesterday
who asked me to write about fighting acne naturally.
Okay…let’s get to it.

My Breakouts

When I was 18, I moved to Orlando, FL for school,
and my skin began to break out all over my forehead.
It was strange because I had never had major
problems with acne growing up.  I typically had one or
two zits at a time, but certainly not numerous
inflammations.  Since I was passed the puberty stage
(at least I hoped!), I became suspicious about what
might be causing it.  I began cutting different things
out of my diet to see if it would go away.  Coffee was
probably my newest edition to my diet, and sure
enough when I eliminated it, the acne resolved.  To
make a long story short, the culprit turned out to be
caffeine.  Even the consumption of decaf coffee and
tea would result in a breakout.  Unfortunately I had
to give up chocolate as well if I wanted to keep my
skin clear.

As I grew older (21) and began occasionally drinking
alcohol, my skin responded the same way.

Soy and Dairy

Finally, as a holistic health counselor, I have become
very conscious about my body and the affect the
environment, stress, and food has on it.  I have also
done experiments with different types of food for
different reasons.  I have learned that my skin is also
sensitive to large quantities of soy in the form of tofu,
and to dairy.  Though I do have break outs when I
consume tofu and dairy products, the breakouts are
milder and it tends to take a bit more of that product
to produce acne, whereas 1 sip or 1 bite of anything
containing caffeine or alcohol affects my skin.

I discovered that my skin was more difficult to take
care of when I went through a phase of eating goat’s
yogurt everyday.  It wasn’t until I stopped eating it
completely that I noticed that my skin began to clear
up.  I didn’t make the correlation while I was eating
the yogurt because the breakouts were less mild than
when I would have caffeine.  The interesting thing is
that around the same time I read an article on
Medscape about a reputable study which found a
correlation between dairy consumption and acne in
teenage girls.  Below I have posted some quotes from
the study as well as a link to the complete article.

The Scientific Study

“There has been a remarkable paucity of evidence for
an association between diet and acne. Our previous
studies suggest that there is an association between
milk intake and teenage acne.”

“In conclusion, our study suggests that milk may have
biological effects in the consumer. Because milk
contains androgenic hormones and other bioactive
molecules, moderation of milk intake may be useful as
part of the management of teenage acne. Furthermore,
this finding raises the possibility that other hormone-
sensitive glands may be affected by the hormonal
constituents of milk. Because of the potential
detrimental effect of milk products on acne, breast
cancer,[42] and prostate cancer[43], these
relationships should be evaluated further.”

Milk Consumption and Acne in Adolescent Girls

My guess is that the food products that affect my skin,
probably in some way cause an imbalance in my
hormones and my skin ends up producing more oil.

A Couple More Tips

Finally, I have discovered that I must wash my face
and exfoliate once per day.  When I say exfoliate, I
just mean a gentle scrub with a wash cloth and soap.
When necessary, if I notice a blemish beginning to
appear, I use 2.5% Benzoyle peroxide which kills the
acne bacteria and reduced inflammation.  My skin is
very clear, and I rarely have to use the Benzoyle
peroxide.

Granted, these solutions are not necessarily the
answer for everyone, but if you haven't tried them, it
might be worth a shot.

The hard part for most people is sticking to the
eliminations once they discover the things that are
affecting their skin.  That’s where I come in.  If you
need support, let me know.  (p.s. green tea has
caffeine in it, some people are not aware of this.)

Have a terrific week.  Check out the cooking classes.
There are new menus and dates.

Love you lots!

Melissa

"I am constantly finding myself being amazed with
Melissa.  She is non-judgmental, supportive, caring,
encouraging, compassionate, open minded, and full of
knowledge.  So many times she has been my support
rock.  I have had the most pleasurable experience of
working with her as both her client, and as her web
designer.  She has supported me in some emotionally
difficult times such as stress when I was in school,
relationships, diet, finances, and business.  She has
always listened intently and has provided me with
sound advice.  I am unable to think of suitable words
to express the thanks and deep appreciation I have for
her and how she impacted my life."
