1. Roadmap for Resolutions

I think New Year's resolutions are important because they
can help us define what we want for our lives and give us a
time frame for reaching our goals.

Many of us make New Year's resolutions without really going
deep in our hearts to find out what we really desire and need
in our lives. We make resolutions and then hope to achieve
them, but we never draw out a plan, let alone a realistic plan,
to guide us in getting there; when we don't achieve our goals
year after year we begin to question our ability to commit or
stick to things.

Give Yourself A Time Limit

Here is a simple exercise you can do to develop your
resolutions for this year. Get out a piece of paper and give
yourself a 5 or 10 minute time limit. Decide before you begin
how much time you want to have. Begin writing down
everything that comes to mind that you would like to
achieve, do, or have in or for your life and/or your future.
Once your pen hits the paper, start your timer and keep
writing until your time is up. Don't worry now whether
something is too little or too big to write down. We will filter
the list later.

While writing you can think about personal character traits
you want to develop, fitness and health goals, relationship,
family, work, intellectual pursuits, education, money, home
improvement or environment, things you want to do for
others, establishing personal time, places you want to go,
things you want to see, people you want to spent time with,
etc.

Freewrite Everything That Comes To Mind

Again, try to keep writing until your time is up. I recommend
doing at least 10 minutes because the longer you write, the
more time you will have to connect with the wants that are
truly genuine.

When your timer goes off you can stop. Take a 5 minute
break and then go back and look at your list.

The Most Important

Grab a highlighter and highlight the things that feel most
important to you. Then go back and star the top 3 -5 of
those highlighted items that you want to create a plan for
and begin working on this year.

I say to "begin" working on, because you may find that some
of your goals will take several years to accomplish...but this
year you may be able to accomplish the first couple steps for
achieving this goal.

Now that you have your 3 to 5 goals pulled out from your list,
take each goal and write down everything you need to do to
accomplish this goal. For example, if I wanted to find a new
job, I might write down: research companies I potentially want
to work for, update my resume, have someone knowledgeable
check my resume to make sure it's effective and meets current
resume standards, send resumes out, make follow-up calls, or
send thank you notes, etc.

Create A Roadmap

Then, create a plan for each of your goals. For instance:
week 1 - research 10 possible companies, week 2 - write and
perfect resume, week 3 - send resumes to companies, week 4
- research 10 more companies, week 5 - make follow-up calls
to first 10 companies, week 6- send resumes to second 10
companies, week 7 - make follow- up calls to second 10
companies, etc.

For a long term plan that you might not complete in one year,
say purchasing a home, you would want to write down all the
steps you need to take to purchase a home and figure out
what you need to do this year to move closer to that goal.
For instance: research and attend informational lectures, find
out about programs I qualify for, research neighborhoods and
communities I might want to live in, develop a budget to put
money away for the down payment, etc.

Use A Calendar

Always mark mini deadlines down in your calendar. Figure out
what you can reasonably achieve. When we break our goals
down in this way, they will be less overwhelming, more realistic,
and we will have set points to keep us on target.

If you want to go deeper with this or would like help developing
realistic guidelines, a coaching session will be effective for this.

Have a great New Year!!

Lots of love.

"For whatever reason, people are so inclined to spend
money on a health club membership and working out
their body, but when it comes to working on the mind
and emotions, people are more hesitant. I remember the
session that we had together and all of the advise and
direction that you provided was truly excellent. You really
made a very positive impact on my life and I can tell that
you are exceptionally gifted in this area. You have a very
intuitive sense and are able to put all the pieces together
very quickly and correctly. These are very good skills for
the type of coaching that you do, and I hope that more
people will see how they can benefit from the coaching
that you provide."
