1. False Self-Esteem
If you've been reading this newsletter for awhile, you know
that I like to offer up inspiration and encouragement, but you
also know that I like to keep things down to earth and real.
We are, after all, living down here on earth (or perhaps it is
"up" here on earth...who knows?), and things aren't always
as peachy keen as we'd like to believe they are.
Today I want to discuss false self-esteem vs. taking
responsibility for who we really are and what we've really
done.
We live in a society where the pursuit of self-esteem and
flattery abound. And just in case you don't know, flattery is
telling someone something (usually positive, or in their favor)
that they want to hear whether it's true or not. We do it
all the time when we tell people things to make them feel
better, even when those things aren't necessarily the truth.
We experience it when our friends take our side even
though there's always two sides to a story. We experience
it when we ask our friend if we need to lose weight and our
friend says "no," even though we both know that it's not the
truth. We experience it when we break up with someone
and our friend says, "He's a jerk. It's his loss," when the
truth is maybe you were the jerk, or maybe no one was...it
just didn't work.
But it can be more serious than these things. We are always
being lifted up and told that we are good, beautiful people,
but the truth is we are not always good and beautiful. We
screw up. We do mean things sometimes. We think things
in our mind that we would never tell another soul. We all do.
And sometimes we experience consequences to our actions
that we deserve. But society tells us to blame our parents
or blame the media, but in order to grow, and to heal, we
need to admit the truth and take responsibility for ourselves.
Our parents and the media have responsibilities too, but we
are taught to ALWAYS look at them, or to pass the blame to
others.
The other day I was listening to a friend of mine tell me about
how she avoids the people in her office because they are all
catty and shallow. I commonly hear people talking about the
shallowness of the "other" people they encounter. And I
think to myself, "Is it only my friends who are the intelligent,
moral, and socially astute?" They are always talking about
the "other" people. We are all probably the "other" people.
Most people who we call "shallow" are probably not as shallow
as we'd like to reduce them to be because of the way they
interrupted our day. We do stupid and crude things too. I
doubt we are as far above the "other" people as we'd like to
think we are.
So my point is that we need to take an honest look at
ourselves. Sometimes we experience consequences that we
deserve and passing the blame onto someone or something
else does not help us grow, nor does it help us heal.
Sometimes we are the ones who need to ask for forgiveness.
Sometimes we are the ones who have to live through difficult
circumstances because we caused them and there is no one
to bail us out.
And the truth is, though we would like to avoid the pain that
might come with accepting responsibility, or look down at the
"badness" or "ignorance" of other people to make ourselves
feel better, when we take responsibility we will grow up; we
will feel good because we are doing the right thing; we will
connect more to others because we'll recognize that we are
just as frail as them, and we will begin to allow others to take
responsibility for themselves when they need to (instead of
always bailing them out with our flattery); this will help them
to grow.
Responsibility is a good thing. We don't need to avoid it.
And true, healthy self-esteem will grow out of it...not a
hollow self-esteem that means nothing.
Love you all.
Melissa
P.S. What to do with all the CSA vegetables...coming soon.

2. Wellness Packages - Make This Year Different
The Lifestyle Makeover
I don't know what I'm doing with my life. I'm not
satisfied with my career, my relationships are not
going anywhere. I'm not really where I want to be.
Sound like you? This package will cover career,
relationships, spirituality, and health. You'll gain a
stronger hold on your identity, and find satisfaction
moving forward towards discovering and completing
personal goals and projects.
6 sessions - $675
The Nutrition and Health Makeover
I don't eat what I should, nor do I stick to an
exercise plan. I'm not even sure if I know what I
should eat! I find myself snacking on junk food
and eating poorly when I'm at work or traveling. I
want to have more energy and be fit. I want to
grow old healthy!
This package is for the typical New Yorker. You
want to be conscious about your health, but you
are not making it happen. You want more energy
and to eat better. In this plan we'll get down to
the nitty gritty about what is getting in the way for
you, and how you can achieve a healthier you
without cramping your lifestyle. We'll create a
therapeutic lifestyle plan that works just for you!
3 sessions - $375
The Weight Loss Makeover
I'm tired of not sticking to my diets. I'm ready
to make a commitment to my health. I want to
see my real body underneath this cushion. I
want to feel good when I walk down the street
and enter a room.
Sticking to a weight loss plan is hard. No doubt
about it! This program is designed to get you off
the dieting cycle and get you on a plan to achieve
results. It's for individuals who are ready to make
a change and commit to giving this gift to
themselves. No more quick fix attempts. This is
the real deal!

I Am - Strategic Solutions for Women in their 20's
I love working with young women! It's a time in life
where you are testing your own identity and power
in this world, yet sometimes you feel conflicted by
the pressure of your parents' and peers' ideas about
what track you should be on. You have your own
mind and you want to use it...but sometimes you're
not sure about your different opinions. This program
deals with self-image, self-respect, confidence, and
effective decision making.
5 sessions - $575 (sliding scale available for this
program...please call or e-mail me for details)
All programs can be adjusted to fit your specific
needs. Number of sessions can be increased or
decreased based on your goals.

"For whatever reason, people are so inclined to
spend money on a health club membership and
working out their body, but when it comes to
working on the mind and emotions, people are
more hesitant. I remember the session that we
had together and all of the advise and direction
that you provided was truly excellent. You really
made a very positive impact on my life and I can
tell that you are exceptionally gifted in this area.
You have a very intuitive sense and are able to
put all the pieces together very quickly and
correctly. These are very good skills for the type
of coaching that you do, and I hope that more
people will see how they can benefit from the
coaching that you provide." - J.R.
