1. Valentine's Day
I had a few requests to write about Valentine's Day or about
love. I thought quite a bit about what I would write actually.
I mean, most people I know seem to run for cover when
Valentine's Day commercialism and expectations make their
way into our lives the day after New Years.
I think most of us become pretty selfish on Valentine's Day,
especially if we're single. We either go through self-pity... or
anger at the day in order to pretend that we are not in a
state of self-pity. :-) Or we are wondering who will get us
what, and if we have any secret admirers.
Blessing Our Friends and Family
Do you know if you go to the card store for a Valentine, you
not only find Valentines for couples, but for moms, dads,
brothers, sisters, best friends etc. I got so excited about
this, that in January I bough my parents three Valentines
cards. My mom actually received them in the mail today and
called me this morning with laughs and smiles. It made my
heart leap to think I had made her feel so good. Yay!
So I've been thinking a lot about flipping this day around.
Thinking about Valentine's Day in terms of how I can give to
and bless the people around me, how I can make the people
I care about feel special, rather than worrying about
whether or not someone will think of me or if I will be alone.
Unforgiveness is Unhealthy
Another thing I want to remind you of is that health is not
just about food choices. In fact, although I think food
choices are important, there are other aspects of our life that
I think can affect our health more than eating poorly. Anger
and unforgiveness are two of those things. Perhaps Valentines
Day can be a day where we think of all those people who we
are holding something against, whether it be mild or major, and
decide to forgive them and even say a prayer of blessing for
them. Okay. Maybe this sounds cheesy... but seriously,
holding onto anger is not good for your health, and what better
day of the year than V-Day to release a person from your
wrath (whether it be silent wrath or loud). God knows there
are certainly things you probably need to be forgive of too,
none of us have a perfect slate.
Another note, sometimes when we make a conscious effort to
forgive someone, we still find ourselves cringing when we see
them. That's okay. You can't expect your feelings to change
overnight, but you can make a point to practice smiling at the
person and saying hi. Your feelings do not necessarily have to
control whether you forgive someone. In fact, often times our
feelings will follow our actions. And sometimes that means you
and that person need to sit down and have an honest, open
conversation.
Okay. It's a Little Cheesy, But...
So. Make a list of people that you bare resentment towards.
Wake-up on the morning of Valentine's Day, pull out your list
and say, "I forgive you so and so, I forgive you so and so."
And then say a mini prayer for each of them, wishing them
their best V-Day ever. And when you see them, smile and
say, "Hi. Happy Valentine's Day." You will probably make a
difference in their life. You will make a difference in your life.
Happy V-Day.

"For whatever reason, people are so inclined to
spend money on a health club membership and
working out their body, but when it comes to
working on the mind and emotions, people are
more hesitant. I remember the session that we
had together and all of the advise and direction
that you provided was truly excellent. You really
made a very positive impact on my life and I can
tell that you are exceptionally gifted in this area.
You have a very intuitive sense and are able to
put all the pieces together very quickly and
correctly. These are very good skills for the type
of coaching that you do, and I hope that more
people will see how they can benefit from the
coaching that you provide." - J.R.
