1. Motivation and Back from My Trip
What is up with this weather? It was spring when I left for
Alabama, and two days after I arrived there, everything
turned cold again!?
I just got back yesterday, and now it's raining. Where did
those nice warm 60 and 70 degree days go?
I had a good time there though, despite the wind chill
factor. I went thrift store shopping with my mom (thrift
stores are much cheaper in AL than they are in New York),
walked up a mountain everyday except for the two days I
did laps in the pool at their rec center. I also got to help my
dad plant his garden. I have been telling him how I've been
craving nature and he sent me home with an herb garden
for my windowsill from Home Depot. :-) I can't wait to set
it up.
Keeping Up With Exercise
I think there was only one day I didn't exercise, and that
was the day I flew in. Somehow I've maintained my
motivation to exercise on a regular basis for the last seven
years. I have not always been that way! Prior to seven
years ago, I rarely ever exercised. I went roller blading
sometimes, and occasionally took an aerobics class, but
that was about it.
Don't get me wrong. There are still days I wake up in the
morning and I would much rather stay cozy than get my
butt moving out the door. There were many mornings
while I was in Alabama that I did NOT want to walk up
that mountain again! It was a real workout... only about
20 minutes up, but fairly steep and I walked fast. But
every morning I found myself headed out the door
ignoring the lazy feelings.
How it Makes Me Feel
I guess something changed in me several years ago
though. I discovered that I feel worse if I don't exercise
everyday, and that bad feeling outweighs the lazy feeling
of having to get out of bed, go out in bad weather, or
take a break from something that I'm doing.
The good feeling that I have after exercising somehow
leaves me with peace for the rest of the day, the fact
that I know I've done something good for myself and for
my body. It also helps to control hunger. When I sit
home all day, I feel hungry much more often and the
desire to eat or snack more often.
My Diet
The same thing has happened with my diet.
After eating a certain way for so long, my body feels
really terrible if I try to go outside of that routine. I love
the way that I feel when I eat whole grains, vegetables,
and fruit. I love the way I feel when I stop before I'm
too full. It feels great. I have energy. I feel light.
I don't want to make you guys think that I always make
perfect choices! There are still days that I forget...
Sometimes I do eat something that's not great for me,
and then I remember why I don't eat those things
anymore. I still get tempted sometimes, but I think
connecting to my body and noticing how things make me
feel... physically, emotionally, or simply how I feel about
myself, has made a big difference.
This Week's Challenge
I want to encourage you to notice how you feel when
you eat different foods this week or how you feel after
exercising. I'm not telling you to change your diet, but
I'm challenging you to take note every time you eat, how
that food makes you feel, or how you feel after eating
"too much." How does it feel to be incorporating regular
exercise into your life? How does it feel not to be?
Get connected with yourself. Maybe that will be your
best motivator. Sometimes your feelings will conflict.
That's when you need to let your brain take control of
your body and just do the thing you know will ultimately
make you feel better!
Good Luck!
Melissa

"For whatever reason, people are so inclined to spend
money on a health club membership and working out
their body, but when it comes to working on the mind
and emotions, people are more hesitant. I remember
the session that we had together and all of the advise
and direction that you provided was truly excellent.
You really made a very positive impact on my life and
I can tell that you are exceptionally gifted in this area.
You have a very intuitive sense and are able to put
all the pieces together very quickly and correctly.
These are very good skills for the type of coaching
that you do, and I hope that more people will see how
they can benefit from the coaching that you provide." - J.R.

Do you know I have a dream to write a column someday?
I love writing and developing a relationship with my
readers.
I currently write newsletters for two wellness centers in
New York, and design and edit a newsletter for a local
dental society.
So.. I thought I'd just put that *dream* out there. If
your company has a regular newsletter and you think it
readers would benefit from regular wellness articles, let
me know... Or if you have connections to a publication
and you like what you read in this newsletter... let me
know. :-)
