1. Yoga and Fear but not Fear of Yoga
I just got back from my very first yoga class. Yes. I am
quite behind in the times, but I have a good excuse...in
the past I've always opted for a dance class instead.
I actually went to meet Kelly Dwyer, the instructor.
www.kellydwyer.net She teaches a "Lunch Express"
class from 12-1 near Union Sqare at a place called
East WestYoga
The class was great! I have a dance background, so I
was able to pick things up quickly, but Kelly is very clear
and easy to understand in her instruction. I felt like I
got a work-out and relaxation all in one.
For those of you who are interested in Yoga, but like me
have never tried it, Kelly is offering an introduction to
Yoga at East West Yoga tomorrow night called Do U Yoga
And I just want to thank her for inviting me to class
today! Thank you Kelly.
Is Fear Limiting Your Life?
So the topic of thought today is fear and it has nothing
to do with my yoga experience, although I'm sure
someone out there has a fear of yoga.
Let me ask you a question. Do you think you avoid
anything in your life because you are somehow afraid?
Relationships? Being thin? Participating in some type of
activity? Pursuing something you really want?
Do you think you ever feel afraid of failing? of letting
someone else see that you're not as great as you hoped
they thought you were? of losing? of being vulnerable?
of finding out you aren't as good as you hoped you were?
Why Do We Avoid?
It's interesting to understand why we avoid things,
especially if it's something we want or want to want. I
began really thinking about fear this weekend when I met
with a client and she told me how she lost 15 pounds
through a weight program and when she received praise
from her group she never went back. She talked about
how she was afraid of the exposure and being vulnerable.
It made her uncomfortable.
Another client feels that she hides behind her weight so
that she can use it as an excuse to not go on audtions
or to socialize because she's afraid of rejection. She said
being rejected for something superficial like weight is
easier than being rejected for who you are inside.
Another wants to lose weight, but finds being thin
uncomfortable because she can't deal with the attention
from men.
One reason it took me so long to finally make a
concerted effort to study dance was because I loved
dance so much and I feared that going into a room with
people who also love dance and were serious about it
might show me that I actually had no talent at all.
Courage for Life
But I don't think that's the way to live life. In the yoga
class today Kelly made a great analogy about how
balance is so important to our life. She said, "if you fall,
that's a good thing because you found your edge. If you
never fall, that means you are always staying in your
comfort zone and you will never be able to stretch your
limits."
What is one thing you think you are avoiding that is
causing you to be limited in your life?
If you want to figure this out and construct a plan to get
past it, let's work together and come up with a solution.
I would love to hear from you! melissa@myheartdances.com
Also, I'm starting a self-esteem and body image group for
this summer. It will meet 1x per week for 8 weeks.
E-mail me if you're interested.
Love you all so much! And I just want you to know how
much I appreciate your responses to these newsletters.
They always encourage me.
xoxo
Melissa

Melissa changed my life. Better yet, she guided me to a place where I could make changes in my life. I thought by going to Melissa I would get a few dieting tips, some new recipes to try at home, maybe lose 2 or 3 pounds, and walk away feeling pretty good about myself. What I received from my sessions with Melissa was so much more! Melissa went to the root of my "troubles" and concerns, she lead me to a place where I could let go , forgive, and be more proactive about my dreams. I remember her saying, "I don't want to see you miss out on following your dreams." She also helped me find ways to incorporate healthy eating into my renewed daily NYC life. SInce Melissa, I have been dancing and performing more than ever and feeling much more positive about my life and career. I sought out Melissa to lose five pounds yet, in the end, I would up gaining so much more than anticipated. I have filled my life with so much meaningful matter that craving healthy foods has come naturally and I desire them in order to support my lifestyle. My achieved weight loss ended up being just an added bonus. - Charlotte, Dancer, NYC 2006
