1. What You Don't Know About Recycling

In my Monday night weight loss group we have been
discussing how our efforts are often sabotaged when we
realize that we are actually losing weight. It feels really
good, and somehow in that moment, we forget who we
are and what we are trying to achieve and think we can
eat whatever we want.

Do you know what I mean? You are experiencing
success, the pounds are coming off, and you feel so
great that you go off the diet thinking that since you
look and feel so great - now you can eat anything and
still be okay.

And Then You Sober Up

And then the next morning, or perhaps several mornings
later, you sober up and come to your senses. You
realize that you have just sabotaged all of your efforts,
that somehow you can't eat anything you want
whenever you want, and that you have to start all over
again.

Why is this?

Why does this feeling of success cause us to get off
the diet and assume another personality?

I think I might have a hint as to why.

We often assume that thin people can have whatever
they want whenever they want. We also associate
being thin with being in control. AND we associate all of
these things with being beautiful.

Is it possible that we are on the verge of achieving our
goals, of being thin, that we assume these assumptions
are now our own reality?

The Truth

But the truth is, "thin" people are not all eating whatever
they want whenever they want in the context that you
might think. Many people who are thin not only wait
until they are hungry to eat, but they also might not eat
the moment they are hungry. Maybe they have a regular
schedule and are waiting for dinner time, or maybe they
are just totally consumed with their current project. You
might see them eating two slices of pizza, but you don't
necessarily know what they've been doing the rest of the
day, or the rest of the week for that matter. Many are
actually paying attention to what they eat and how
much they exercise in order to maintain their "thinness."

My point is, don't be fooled by the illusion. I can't tell
you how many times people have made the assumption
that I don't work at maintaing my weight. Most people,
unless they know me, think that I am "naturally" thin and
they can't imagine me putting on pounds.

The fact is that I can gain weight very easily. I exercise
everyday and I am conscious of how many calories I eat
on a daily basis. I still eat pizza sometimes and every
once in awhile an ice cream cone. But just because you
see me eating it, don't assume that I do it all the time.
It'd be nice if it were that easy, but for most of us it's
not.

Weight vs. Health

There are some people who can, but they are the
minority. And weight doesn't necessarily correlate with
health. Sometimes people who have to pay attention to
their weight, ultimately make better health choices.

So keep your head up and keep shooting for your goals.
Write down all the advantages to losing weight and keep
that piece of paper in your back pocket. Read it every
few hours at the beginning of a diet, since you never
know when temptation might hit. Don't look at what
other people are doing and assume that you know the
whole story. We always compare our insides with other
people's outsides - whether it be relationships, lifestyle,
intelligence etc.

Stay present with yourself and what you need!

exercises that help you have a clearer understanding of
who you are and how your environment and the media

Within the past few months I have made huge lifestyle
changes. I take time to listen to what my body needs.
My cravings for artificial sweeteners and processed foods
have diminished. I cook with all whole foods and feel
stronger, more alert, vibrant, and healthy. I have a
renewed passion for life and sense of well-being. I am
overcoming my eating disorder, exploring my spirituality,
and discovering new possibilities for a gratifying career
path. I treasure our relationship. Thank you so much for
