1. Obesity in Our Genes?
Some studies have shown that adopted children are
more likely to be obese if their biological parents were
obese, even if their adoptive parents are thin - and
vice versa. Also, twins who are separated are more
likely to have similar weight to each other than to their
adoptive parents.
So is weight gain purely a result of behavioral habits
we have picked up? Probably not...
Excuses?
But wait. Does that give you an excuse to settle for
being overweight? Let's look at the whole picture.
Americans obviously have a major problem with
obesity. It's not like countries all over the world are
struggling with this epidemic (unless of course they
have been Westernized).
Just the fact that we see a rise in obesity in other
countries when the West starts infiltrating them with
our processed junk (umm... food) and more
industrialized, less active lifestyle - shows us that
obesity can't be purely genetic. Not to mention,
individuals coming from countries with a history of
lean bodies become overweight when they move to
America.
But the studies are interesting, and inheritance just
might play a role in this whole skinny vs. obese thing.
Don't Give Up
But I don't think this is a reason to give up. I think
this knowledge can give you the advantage of
knowing you must take your weight loss much more
seriously.
In the article, Dr. Stunkard, said that these findings
mean that "those who tend to be fat will have to
constantly battle their genetic inheritance if they
want to reach and maintain a significantly lower
weight."
From this perspective you have to take responsibility
to be more disciplined. You don't assume that you
can't lose weight because you are dysfuntional. This
process isn't easy and hunger signals are powerful.
Food is not Everything! - I Promise!
Nevertheless, I believe we do have major behavioral
problems around food here in America, toppled with
the fact the food here is denatured, and high in
calories and fat. It is also constantly being marketed
to us as the most wonderful experience you can have
on earth. (Just watch one commercial about food and
you will see what I mean).
Keep working. Don't give up. You can do this!
Summer is here. I'm doing a 3 month summer challenge
program. E-mail me if you are interested.
3 Month Summer Challenge
It consists of developing a plan to reach certain goals
by August 31st (the end of our "cultural" summer).
These goals can be weight or health related, or they
can be around other life aspirations - such as in career
or relationships.
The program offers 6 sessions with me, 1 cooking class,
and a fitness evaluation/session with a personal trainer
(you get to choose from several who I think are great).
The cost of the 3 month summer challenge is: $645
or $215 per month. You can't beat that!!
E-mail me for more info.

Within the past few months I have made huge lifestyle
changes. I take time to listen to what my body needs.
My cravings for artificial sweeteners and processed foods
have diminished. I cook with all whole foods and feel
stronger, more alert, vibrant, and healthy. I have a
renewed passion for life and sense of well-being. I am
overcoming my eating disorder, exploring my spirituality,
and discovering new possibilities for a gratifying career
path. I treasure our relationship. Thank you so much for
your support.
