1. Omega What?
Surely you've heard about Omega 3 oils and Omega 6 oils,
but maybe you are still confused about it all and what to
do with them.
Omega 3's and 6's are essential fatty acids. They must
be obtained from our diet because our body cannot make
them on its own.
What They Do
Omega 3's ultimately help our body to build hormones that
assist in blood clotting, immune function, and cell growth.
According to Dr. Andrew Weil, Omega 6's also help to
build hormones, but they do the opposite of what Omega
3's do. Omega 6's increase inflammation, blood clotting,
and cell formation while Omega 3's decrease these
functions. Inflammation, by the way, often seems like
something we don't want, but it does have an important
role in immune function.
Omega 3's and Omega 6's should be in balance. The
problem is that in the American diet we get way more
Omega 6's than we need and not enough Omega 3's.
Omega 6's come from nuts, seeds, and their oils as well
as vegetable oils like soybean oil. Soybean oil is
commonly used in fast food and packaged foods. So we
may get a lot more of it than we realize.
The Problems Caused
An imbalance of these oils has been connected to
depression and inflammatory diseases. According to Dr.
Hibbeln, a researcher from the National Institute of
Health, found that a pregnant woman's consumption of
omega 3's correlated with intelligence, fine-motor skills,
and anti-social behavior in her child. Other studies have
also shown a decrease in violent behavior among those
who have increased their omega 3 oils.
Sources
Good sources of omega 3's are cold water oily fish such
as wild salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies, sardines,
and flaxseeds, and walnuts.
Common omega 6's sources are sunflower, safflower,
corn, cottonseed, and soybean oils as well as evening
primrose and black currant oil. Most egg yolks
(depending on the chicken's diet) and meats are also
major sources of omega 6's.
Basically
Basically, Americans need to work on increasing omega
3's. And who knows, if you are experiencing some of the
symptoms mentioned above, maybe increasing 3's will
help.
