1. Smiling
I am really enjoying the "rain break" we are having
today. I love thunderstorms! And it was a nice
change for the morning.
I had a meeting up at City College earlier today and
since the rain had stopped I decided to walk home
instead of taking the subway.
I am curious - how do you guys walk down the
street? Do you look at people and smile? Do you
have your guard up and just look straight ahead?
How about when you are out - say at the library or
maybe cafe or bookstore - and you see a cute guy
or girl. Do you smile at them? What if you feel like
they are "out of your league?" Do you ever feel
intimidated by someone who seems very professional,
classy, or "hot?" Do you act like you are cool and
don't care, or are you warm towards that person?
Today when I was walking home I chose to make a
concerted effort to look directly at people and offer
a smile. This is very different thing from when I'm
listening to my mp3 player, daydreaming about
something exciting and simply walking down the
street with a huge smile on my face because I'm
happy. I mean, on this walk, I looked at people and
sort of said "hi" with my smile.
Not JUST A Smile
When we smile at someone, we convey a message
that is much more than just a smile. It's like we are
saying "I notice you," "You are worth being smiled
at," "You are acceptable, "I am friendly."
A lot of times we don't smile at people because we
are intimidated. We are afraid of rejection. Other
times we don't smile at people because we think WE
are out of THEIR league. And I'm not just talking
about romantically. Come on! You know that you
do it! Pay attention to yourself. You might be
surprised by some of your own ways of rejecting
people.
It Feels Good!
I have to tell you, it was so amazing walking home
today. It feels so good to smile at someone and
then see them brighten up and smile back. I smiled
at people who I totally thought would barely give
me the time of day - some of them looked like they
were surprised I was smiling at THEM! And almost
all of them became cheerful as soon as they noticed
my smile. Men, women, old, young! I even smiled at
people who I normally wouldn't pay much attention
to.
Of course, I don't recommend smiling at people who
will take it as an invitation to cat call!
Anyway... Sometimes we don't smile at people
because we feel insecure. I want to encourage you
to smile at people today. To smile at that cute guy
you see at the subway stop every morning, to smile
at someone who looks like they're having a rough day,
to smile at someone who seems too busy for you.
You give a gift when you do. They might not choose
to accept it, but you might find that far more smile
back than turn their head. And you will probably
make at least one person's day!
Make sure you let me know if you get a date as a
result of this!
I hope you enjoy the rest of your week! I'm done
with my travels for awhile, and so happy to be home.
xoxo

Within the past few months I have made huge lifestyle
changes. I take time to listen to what my body needs.
My cravings for artificial sweeteners and processed foods
have diminished. I cook with all whole foods and feel
stronger, more alert, vibrant, and healthy. I have a
renewed passion for life and sense of well-being. I am
overcoming my eating disorder, exploring my spirituality,
and discovering new possibilities for a gratifying career
path. I treasure our relationship. Thank you so much for
your support.
