1. Planned Escape Time

I'm headed out to Fire Island in a couple hours and the
weather keeps teasing of rain. It actually wouldn't
bother me at all if it rained the whole weekend at the
beach because I'm just really looking forward to getting
away and reading a good book!

Being a Worry Wart

Do you know that I am a worry wart? Yes. That is me.
That's probably why I became a holistic health counselor
- because I needed to balance myself out and have
constant reminders to destress.

I have actually battled with insomnia for a little over 10
years. It's because I lie in bed at night thinking...and
thinking...and thinking some more. I know a lot of New
Yorkers who are also like this. I have had many client
confessions.

The insomnia has actually gotten better as I learn to
let go of things. One of the best pieces of advice I got
was from an older woman who I deeply respect. She
said, "Yes, Melissa, you do have a lot of responsibility
and pressure, but there is a time to handle that, and
3 a.m. is for sleeping."

So at night when I catch myself thinking and analyzing,
I begin to assure myself that "this is the time for
sleeping." When I meditate on those words, I find that
I'm able to let go and sleep better.

A Time to Destress

I actually didn't write today to tell you about my
insomnia. I wrote to remind you to destress. Some-
times we have difficulty really maximizing the benefits
of destressing because we don't really create the space
for it. Meaning, we just sort of plop down on the couch
and turn the t.v. on and call it relaxation. Even though
we are technically taking downtime, somehow we often
hang onto our worries, never letting ourselves truly relax.

One of the best ways to destress is to actually plan for
it. It's the process of actually saying to yourself,
"Tonight from 7pm - 9pm, I am going to do something I
love and put work aside," or "Friday night I'm going out
and I'm leaving work at work, and my troubles on the
shelf." I think it's even better if you put it in your
planner. Then it's more official.

Making a Conscious Choice to Let Go

It's like you are consciously telling yourself that this
time you have planned for is not for work or worries.
You are telling yourself that it's safe to take this time
away and that you will get back to your duties and
problem solving when you return. It's a way for you to
actually mentally escape.

Now, I know I'm going to get a gazillion e-mails from
you guys telling me how I should handle my insomnia
issue. I know you guys care about me! :-) Trust me
though, I've exhausted my list of options. I am quite
resourceful. I would much rather get an e-mail from
you about how much you like the newsletters, a
workshop you attended, or a cooking class! :-)

Have a great weekend. And take some planned escape
time, and don't forget to hug somebody (probably not a
stranger on the street).

xoxo

New Cooking Classes and Discount

P.S. I just listed the cooking classes for the fall. I had
to raise the price to $50 per person. I hate to do that,
but I promise I will do my best to always keep the cost
low comparatively to other classes in the city.

I am offering a special to all newsletter subscribers.
Through August 15th only, you can register for a
cooking class at the former price of $40 per person. You
can also purchase gift certificates at that price, which
can be used until December 31.

Please e-mail me for details: melissa@myheartdances.com

Within the past few months I have made huge lifestyle
changes. I take time to listen to what my body needs.
My cravings for artificial sweeteners and processed foods
have diminished. I cook with all whole foods and feel
stronger, more alert, vibrant, and healthy. I have a
renewed passion for life and sense of well-being. I am
