1. Why New Yorkers Live Longer
This morning a friend sent me an excerpt from this week's
New York magazine. It's great news for New Yorkers.
I love this city and it is difficult for me to imagine leaving.
But I admit, being into health and taking care of the
environment, there are days I worry about the affects of
living in and breathing in all of this pollution. I also wonder
what affect stress will have on me - and the average New
Yorker.
But apparently New Yorkers are outliving the average
person in the rest of the country, and our life expectancy
is increasing faster as well. The average life expectancy
for our nation is increasing by about 2.5 years, and the
average life expectancy for New Yorkers is increasing by
6.2 years.
Despite living in a very poluted city and experiencing high
stress levels, perhaps we have something very unique that
balances it all out? Could it be the smoking ban? The trans
fat ban? hmmm... Or maybe something that is embedded
in our everyday lifestyle?
"....New Yorkers live longer than most people in the
country....a New Yorker can expect to live 9 months
longer than the average American....our life expectancy is
increasing at a rate faster than that of the rest of the
country....a possible cause for this is....walking."
"Scientists who study urban health argue that it's not that
we walk more....it is the WAY we walk. Researchers have
long known that we New Yorkers walk fast - far faster
than anywhere else in the country....in fact the easiest
way to tell a New Yorker from an 'out of towner' is walking
speed."
"New York is literally designed to force people to walk fast,
climb stairs....what's more is that our social contract
dictates that you should move your ass when you're on the
sidewalk as to not annoy your fellow walkers...every city
block doubles as a racewalking track, every subway station,
a Stairmaster...."

Within the past few months I have made huge lifestyle
changes. I take time to listen to what my body needs.
My cravings for artificial sweeteners and processed foods
have diminished. I cook with all whole foods and feel
stronger, more alert, vibrant, and healthy. I have a
renewed passion for life and sense of well-being. I am
overcoming my eating disorder, exploring my spirituality,
and discovering new possibilities for a gratifying career
path. I treasure our relationship. Thank you so much for
your support.
