1. Busyness Pushing Out Your Personal Life?
Do you ever feel like your work life is taking over your private
life...or rather pushing out your private life and other
interests?
Maybe you love your work, so you don't mind working late
hours and taking work home on the weekends. Some of you
hate your job, but you are feeling the ball and chain for
various reasons. Some of you are artists - so you often spend
your free time taking classes, training, and practicing - what
you love turns into your work. New Yorkers are passionate
people and we live in a highly competitive environment...so
it's easy to forget we have lives outside of our work.
Loving Work
As you know I have this business which has grown out of the
things in life that I really believe in. Because of this, my work
is almost completely integrated into my life. It is very hard for
me to leave anything "at the office." Not only that, my home
IS my office, so separating myself from work is not an easy
thing to do.
But it is a necessary thing to do. Remembering who you are
beyond the thing you do 40 PLUS hours a week is so important.
Even artists need to remember that their art is an expression
of life - outer life and inner life - and if you aren't taking the
time to experience life outside of the art - what will you have
to express that means something to the rest of the world?
Dreams Unrelated to Career
What do you dream of? I mean - not just in your career. What
do you dream about for your personal and private life? Do you
remember? Have you taken time to just sit and nurture that
side of you? Are there projects at home, unrelated to your
work, that you would like to do? Is there a class you would
like to take that is unrelated to your professional life -
something different you can do that will bring something new,
therapeutic, or inspirational to your life?
We don't live in a society where we are progressively finding
more free time. In fact, when it comes to Americans taking
time for fun, play, and recreation, we compare poorly to the
rest of the world. Some reports say that Americans are not
even using up their vacation time! That being said, we
clearly have to schedule ourselves in. We have to learn how
to say "no," not just to other people, but to ourselves. We
have to create limits for ourselves so that we remember to
enjoy aspects of our lives that are easily pushed out by all
the other things we have to do.
Planning is the Key! Make a Plan
I love my work. But last weekend I shut down my computer
on Friday evening at 6:45 p.m., and didn't turn it back on
until after my morning workout on Monday. I had a fabulous
weekend. I have not done this in AGES! It was almost like
having the opportunity to discover who I am outside of my
work. To discover the 30 year old Melissa apart from her
business - just in her home, spending time on her personal
life. I actually enjoyed the simpleness of fall cleaning...
experimenting with natural cleaning solutions, clearing out my
closet, and
staying up late...really late!...with friends.
When is the next time you can take a few hours or a few
days to do something else? What will you do with your time?
Even if you don't know, maybe there's a discovery waiting to
happen. Make a date with yourself. And don't forget to say
"no" when something else demands your attention.
Have a terrific week.

Within the past few months I have made huge lifestyle
changes. I take time to listen to what my body needs.
My cravings for artificial sweeteners and processed foods
have diminished. I cook with all whole foods and feel
stronger, more alert, vibrant, and healthy. I have a
renewed passion for life and sense of well-being. I am
overcoming my eating disorder, exploring my spirituality,
and discovering new possibilities for a gratifying career
path. I treasure our relationship. Thank you so much for
