1. Does Insecurity Sabotage Your Relationships?

The topic of insecurity has been coming up a lot in my
sessions with clients and in my conversations with friends.
Insecurity plays a role in many different areas of our life
and it occurs for different reasons. I can't cover them all
here, but there are some important things I want to say
about how insecurity affects our relationships.

Insecurity often causes us to hide. We put on the face
that we think people want to see, or we avoid
relationships with people who we would like to have a
relationship with, Insecurity often accuses others of
doing something they didn't do, and it can cause
unnecessary conflict in relationships.

Impossible to Develop Intimacy

In essence, insecurity can really sabotage relationships.
It can cause us to believe things about ourselves that
aren't true and believe things about others that aren't
true. It makes it almost impossible to develop real
intimacy. Not only do you miss out, but the other person
misses out on you too.

Often times it's not the thing you are insecure about
that creates problems in the relationship; it is the
insecurity itself that creates problems in the relationship.

Just Take A Chance

Sometimes you have to just be confident and give all
you've got: your personality, your smiles, your ideas,
your feelings. People want to be in relationships with
people who can give love. When you are insecure, it's
difficult to give love because you are always afraid that
it will be rejected. Everyone wants to feel accepted and
like they belong, not just you. People want to be in
relationships with people who are willing to give
whatever they have (I'm not talking about money or
things... I'm talking about who you are). They also
don't want to have to always assure you of your worth.
Don't ask people if you are acceptable or okay. You
need to trust that you have worth. (If you need to have
an "am I okay?" conversation with someone, have it with
someone you know very well and be willing to hear
objective feedback).

What I'm Not Saying

I'm not saying to be confident in major personality flaws
that could be injurious to another person. If you clearly
have some issue that needs to be resolved - like a
problem with anger - then you need to take active steps
to correct it.

I'm also not saying to continue giving yourself to
someone who always hurts you.

Life Is Too Short!

What I'm saying, is that for most of us, are insecurities
are just getting in the way of us allowing someone else
the joy of having us a part of their life. Sometimes
tossing your insecurity out the window means having to
swallow your pride, having to show your
vulnerabilities
, having to let someone know how you
feel
, having to take a chance at confidently sharing
your ideas
(while not shrinking between your shoulders),
having to take a chance that someone might not like
what you have to offer - And that that's okay.

So...instead of focusing on yourself and what someone
else might think of you. Focus on loving the people in
your life, giving them a smile or a hug, asking them about
their day - and when someone seems "put off," don't
assume it's about you.

Within the past few months I have made huge lifestyle
changes. I take time to listen to what my body needs.
My cravings for artificial sweeteners and processed foods
have diminished. I cook with all whole foods and feel
stronger, more alert, vibrant, and healthy. I have a
renewed passion for life and sense of well-being. I am
overcoming my eating disorder, exploring my spirituality,
and discovering new possibilities for a gratifying career
path. I treasure our relationship. Thank you so much for
your support.
