1. Swallowing Your Pride

I was spent several hours in the park today lying on a bit blanket.
The breeze was picking up (after the humidity broke) and pulling
crisp leaves from the trees. I can't believe it's really fall. It's so
beautiful and yet I am still clinging to summer.

It has been a very busy week, so I decided to reprint an article I
wrote in 2005. Many of you were subscribers then! I can't
believe how long we've been doing this (me writing, you reading).

I know a lot of you wanted to take my salmon burger class this
fall and it filled up. I'm adding another one on October 18th.
Please e-mail me for registration info if you're interested.

Enjoy this weeks article, and I hope you have a WONDERFUL
weekend!

Melissa

Swallowing Your Pride

If there's anything I know that can get in the way of having a
genuine life, being genuinely happy, and experiencing genuine
love, it's pride. There are certain types of pride that are
honorable like in doing something well or being proud of a friend
for achieving a goal. But then there's the type of pride that
won't allow you to forgive, that won't allow you to admit fault,
or that keeps you on a journey to achieve some great thing
that will make you look good when deep in your heart you don't
really want that thing at all.

Pride often doesn't even allow you to see what it is the real
you wants or who the real you is.

Fear Not Looking Perfect

We fear that we may not look as perfect as we want people to
think we are; we fear finding out that we are not as perfect as
we think we are. In the end we are unhappy and unfulfilled
because we have only been living on the surface.

Many New Yorkers are holding down jobs so they can establish
some significance by the amount of money they make, others
have achieved a certain status they don't want to let go of
because they may lose the admiration of people, some are only
living in this city because it's "New York" and leaving might
signify failure.

Pride Destroys Intimacy

In relationships, pride keeps you from saying you're sorry. Pride
won't let you be vulnerable and tell someone how you truly feel.
Pride won't let you be known and won't let someone know you
because if they saw beneath your exterior you are afraid they
might not like you.

Pride infects all of our lives. Pride has been the primary thing I
have sought to burn away from my being and still it trails me
close behind. Where is pride present in your life? Where are
you not admitting that you were wrong? Who do you "look
down on," and think of yourself as "better than?" What parts of
you will you not let people see? Is it the needy part? Is it the
clumsy part? The angry part? The failing part? What dream
are you not going after because you may not achieve the
status your current path promises?

An Encouragement

Humanity is beautiful. We are imperfect beings with passion,
with complex emotions, with failings. We can embrace each
other with these things. This is what makes us know we are
alive, that we are real. The most intimate moments are when
you can relate to someone else your most vulnerable places.

Within the past few months I have made huge lifestyle
changes. I take time to listen to what my body needs.
My cravings for artificial sweeteners and processed foods
have diminished. I cook with all whole foods and feel
stronger, more alert, vibrant, and healthy. I have a
renewed passion for life and sense of well-being. I am
overcoming my eating disorder, exploring my spirituality,
and discovering new possibilities for a gratifying career
path. I treasure our relationship. Thank you so much for
your support.

3. Inspiring Quote ****

"Dogs are my favorite role models. I want to work like a dog,
doing what I was born to do with joy and purpose. I want to
play like a dog, with total, jolly abandon. I want to love like a
dog, with unabashed devotion and complete lack of concern
about what people do for a living, how much money they have,
or how much they weigh. The fact that we still live with dogs,
even when we don't have to herd or hunt our dinner, gives me
hope for humans and canines alike."

From the March 2004 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine.
