1. Kiwi Berries and Eliminating Trash
You know what one of my favorite things about the changing
seasons is? There is always some new and exciting fruit or
vegetable coming into season and it gives me a chance to try
something a little out of the ordinary.
Do you ever just pick up a fruit or vegetable at the grocery
store simply because it looks interesting? You don't???
Ya know, you could add a little fun to your day by getting out
of your comfort zone and trying something new. :-)
Today, for the first time ever, I tried Kiwi Berries.
(Picture posted on the blog: http://myheartdances.blogspot.com/)
A Little Intimidating?
I understand how they could be a little intimidating if you
don't know what to do with them. Each berry is about the
size of a grape, with a thin skin the equivalent in texture to
a tangerine. You don't have to peal them to eat them though.
You can just walk down the street and pop them in your
mouth. Eating fruit with the skin like that is kind of exciting
because it's different than what we are used to.
Eating a kiwi berry is like having a burst of fresh kiwi in your
mouth. They are sweet and sour at the same time. Totally
fun.
Nutrient Dense
Anyway...so now you know...and they are super high in
antioxidants and vitamins...a much healthier snack for your
break today than the candy bar from the bodega around the
corner.

My Eliminating Trash Experiment
More importantly, I'm doing an experiment starting on Friday
October 12. I have been reading No Impact Man's regular
blog, and he has impacted me. (www.noimpactman.com)
I am going to try and make more changes that lessen my
own negative impact on our environment. I have been so
saddened by the amount of trash I see on the streets here
in the city, and also the amount of times - in my own
apartment - my roommates and I have to deliver trash to
our basement. I really feel that I need to be more mindful
of what I'm throwing away and how necessary it is to have
that much waste.
For Seven Days
For 7 days I'm not going to consume any food that would
leave trash behind. That means nothing can be bought that
is in packaging; All of my food has to be fresh, and I'll need
to use reuseable bags for my purchases.
Why only 7 days? Well... baby steps - right? I want to see
how this goes. I love whole grain cold cereals, luna bars,
and packaged veggie sandwiches. So this is going to be a
challenge for me. I'm very excited because I am always
saying that I need to eat more vegetables, and this
experiment will inevitably cause me to practically live on
vegetables!
It is the first of many experiments to help the environment
that I plan to try out in the next year.
Who's In With Me?
Who's in with me? If you want to commit to the same
experiment (or your own version of it) for the same seven
days (starting Oct. 12), e-mail me.
If you just started receiving these newsletters, and are
unsure of who No Impact Man is, you can read the August
23, 2007 post on my blog.
