1. Gearing Up for My NO TRASH Week
If you read last week's newsletter, you know that Friday the
12th I am going to be fasting from trash for 7 days. Not all
trash exactly, but no trash from food.
For one, this means I cannot purchase anything that comes
in packaging. AND a very perceptive friend of mine has also
inquired about how I will handle things like apple cores and
paper receipts from my purchases.
This is challenging! I hadn't thought about that. So...the
solution to receipts is shopping at the Farmer's Market. This
is typically another move (in itself) that is very good for the
environment, local economy, and our small farmers. Yay for
small business!
Farmer's Market
To find out where all the farmer's markets in NYC are:

Now...how I'm going to handle trash that comes naturally
from food? I definitely don't want to throw it away, because
then it will end up in a landfill and take who knows how long
to break down into soil.
The Solution
I am going to keep all of my food scraps in a bag or bin or
something reuseable, and when it is full, I'm going to drop
it off at the Lower East Side Ecology Center.
The Lower East Side Ecology Center has a FREE composting
drop off program
They accept:
All fruit and vegetable peelings and pits
Non-greasy food scraps or leftovers
Rice, pasta, bread, cereal
Coffee Grounds w/ filter
Tea Bags
Hair and Nails (animal and human) - that one's a little strange
Egg and Nut Shells
Cut or Dried Flowers, Wreaths
Houseplants and Potting Soil
Basically, by delivering these items to be composted, we
take our trash and turn it back into dirt that can be used for
wonderful things, like fertilizing houseplants and gardens.
If you don't compost, it will unnecessarily sit in a landfill and
take much much much longer to break down into soil because
it is not exposed to oxygen. And the trash will keep piling up
and up and up....
Nice thought, huh?
Composting at Home
You actually can start your own compost bin at home, yes -
even in your New York City apartment. But more on that at
a later time.
I know it takes time to make changes. It's not easy to alter
our lifestyle and habits... but it is important... so maybe this
is all something to think about. If you think you are worried
about having time to drop off your scraps, you could take
your hour gym workout and walk or ride your bike to the drop
off center instead. :-)
I will be trying to blog about my 7 day experiment, so check
in and see how it's going for me.
