1. Why New Year's Resolutions Don't Work
Why do you think most people don't follow through with their New Year's resolutions? How often have you met goals you have set for yourself?
I think the reason most people don't follow through with their goals is because:
(and just so we don't pretend this is other people's problem and not our own, I will use the word "you" to address those people.
http://www.myheartdances.com/newsletters/previous/2007/12-27-07_newyear.htm
1. You make your goal too general, and never think through the steps they will need to take to actually achieve it. You don't get out a roadmap, so you just end up doing the same thing you've always done...your same routine in life.
It's Meaningless
2. Your goal is, in actuality, meaningless to you.
a. You make a goal based on what you think other people want from you, or what would help you to fit into society's standards better. In other words, you don't think about something you really want that would actually make YOUR life better on a very practical level.
b. You make a goal based on a fantasy or dream that you've held onto, but that actually has no actual benefits. This is a bad example, but a still a good illustration to get across what I mean... *You've always dreamed of having your own house with a white picket fence in the suburbs. But the truth is, you love city life, hate doing housework, and have no interest in the commitment of a mortgage. So, you're kinda hanging onto some dream that you don't actually want... so you think you're procrastinating, when in actuality, you're doing exactly what you want to do. In other words... maybe it's time to reevaluate your dreams and see if they match who you really are. Would that think you think you want really make you happy?
Don't Know How To Do It
4. You simply don't know how to achieve the goal. Maybe it's time to admit that you don't have directions start asking questions.
Fear
5. or You're simply afraid.
What To Do
I think the first 2 examples are, by far, the most usual reasons that people don't follow through with their goals. Their goal is meaningless, or they don't have a roadmap.
These things are definitely fixable. Just take some time to think about what really means something to you, and then think about what it would actually take to get there.
Then ask yourself if you are willing to accept the challenges, work, and consequences to have this thing?

2. Some Great 2008 New Year's Resolutions
Below are some great New Year's resolutions I heard about this year. One of them is mine. Can you guess which one?
1. To start practicing non-violent communication
*why I think it's great:
This person did not mean physical violence when she wrote this. She wrote it because most of us have no clue how to communicate, and when we've been hurt, we often communicate defensively or in order to hurt that person back. Neither of these ways of communicating actually help strengthen a relationship. Learning to express your feelings and ask for what you want in a non-threatening way are much more helpful.
2. No self-deprecating comments
*why I think it's great:
We are always putting ourselves down though words or guestures, and usually this doesn't help us to change. Even when we do mess up, self-deprecating comments don't express the truth of the situation or what we're actually feeling. Usually we use them to cover something up about ourselves that we are afraid to admit, or are afraid that someone else is going to disapprove of. Another reason we do it is because we think it will help us change, but this never works (at least I've never seen it work!). It's better to be honest about what you're really trying to say or express than to try and protect yourself through putting yourself down.
3. No purchasing anything for gifts, everything must be made or a hand-me-down
*why I think it's great:
Consumerism is overrated... Does anyone give meaningful gifts anymore? This kind of goal can help you to spend less money and really think about and put time into gifts for people you care about. It can also force you to share great things that you still have but aren't using. *okay... this one was mine! :-)

"For whatever reason, people are so inclined to spend money on a health club membership and working out their body, but when it comes to working on the mind and emotions, people are more hesitant. I remember the session that we had together and all of the advise and direction that you provided was truly excellent. You really made a very positive impact on my life and I can tell that you are exceptionally gifted in this area. You have a very intuitive sense and are able to put all the pieces together very quickly and correctly. These are very good skills for the type of coaching that you do, and I hope more people will see how they can benefit from the coaching that you provide." -J.R.
