1. What Does it Mean to Follow Your Heart?
If you have been reading this newsletter for very long, you know that I really believe in the importance of following your heart and going after your dreams. Sometimes I don't like using those words because they've become so cliché. But what I mean when I say that I believe in these things is that I think, in life, most of us get off track somewhere along the lines because we are either trying to please someone else, or we are trying to stay safe - I mean too safe.
Pleasing people might mean maintaining a reputation, having prestige, trying to gain respect from family members or friends, or not telling the truth because you are afraid of hurting someone or afraid of what you will lose if you hurt someone. Staying safe might mean avoiding putting yourself in a position to potentially fail, never challenging yourself in your most vulnerable places, doing only what you are positive you can do well, trying to earn more money than you really need, etc.
Not Just Some Whim
When I say that I believe in following your heart, I'm not talking about following a whim or some feeling that just brushed up against you, but could run away just as fast. These things aren't always so trustworthy. Our feelings change based on hormones, stress, sleep, etc. What I'm talking about are two things. One of those things has to do with a major purpose in your life...something that is present in your heart often...something that keeps coming back, something that you have a deeper desire for, and maybe have already seen that you have some talent for. The other thing has to do with honesty and integrity with yourself. I'm not saying that maybe you are a dishonest person. I'm saying that sometimes our social proprieties cause us to speak things that aren't the truth because we are trying to be "polite," or because we are trying to do the "right" thing. We just go through the motions and say "yes: when we think we're supposed to say "yes" and we say "no" when we think we're supposed to say "no." But is that what you really mean? Are you saying what you really mean? Are you avoiding it because you are afraid of losing something or because you are afraid of arguing? Do you think some "thing" is really yours if you have to lie to keep it?
So really what I'm expressing when I say I believe in following your heart and going after your dreams is that - and this goes for most of us - it's tough to always be honest with yourself and to actually speak that truth to others, and I think it's easy to procrastinate on our dreams or take another road due to fear or comfort, but I want to challenge you to do it... To take it all piece by piece. To work towards it. Why?
Truth is a Stronger Foundation
Because I think your relationships will become more real and intimate, and although you might lose some people who can't handle the truth, you will ultimately discover people who can and you will feel like all of you is loved, not just part. And I think you were created with a talent that is intended to be used as a gift to the world or to your local community (community in the general sense, or community - as in your friends and family)... and I think that if you don't acknowledge and give these things that are inside you expression in some form (sometimes that means in "hobby" not always in "work") then not only will you cheat the people in your life from a gift you were given to give, but I think the knowledge within yourself that you aren't doing it will continue to haunt you until you do - so you might is well just get on with it.
A Roadmap
Sometimes we just don't know how to get there. We procrastinate, not because we are lazy, but because the big picture is not broken down into smaller more accessible pieces that we can handle more easily. We get overwhelmed, so we just keep it on the backshelf.
If you need help with these things, I can work with you to develop some concrete goals...or even help you to figure out what it is that you really want to do (sometimes trying to keep up with the world makes us forget what we want).

"For whatever reason, people are so inclined to spend money on a health club membership and working out their body, but when it comes to working on the mind and emotions, people are more hesitant. I remember the session that we had together and all of the advise and direction that you provided was truly excellent. You really made a very positive impact on my life and I can tell that you are exceptionally gifted in this area. You have a very intuitive sense and are able to put all the pieces together very quickly and correctly. These are very good skills for the type of coaching that you do, and I hope more people will see how they can benefit from the coaching that you provide." -J.R.
