1. A Choice Between Your Heart and Security
What do you do when you are presented with two great opportunities: one is an opportunity that will offer what appears to be certain security, and may never be offered to you again; the other is more risky, but will also be gone if you pass it up for the other. The first opportunity is a really good one, one that you could be happy doing. The second is an opportunity that makes your heart beat fast; it is a dream.
The Background Story
Several years ago, a former client of mine was offered a place on the famous Rockette line. The only problem was that she was majoring in dance at Marymount Manhattan College and was not supposed to be auditioning. She valued her education, so she wasn't sure what to do. Facing her directors wouldn't be easy, but she decided to take the position and was surprised when her directors gave her their blessing.
Each winter Elizabeth has been invited back as a Rockette, but she has to audition each time. Life as a dancer is difficult, even if you find work, it can still be difficult to make ends meet between gigs.
Recently
Recently Elizabeth graduated from Marymount and was faced with another challenge. She was offered an internship at the United Nations. For those of you who don't know, it's very difficult to become an employee at the U.N., and the most likely way to do it is through an internship. If you don't get your foot in the door that way, you may never get your foot in the door.
Elizabeth felt stuck. Doing the internship at the U.N. could offer security and a certain future. But she still wanted to dance. She wrote me back in February during my newsletter series on the realities of following your heart. Read what she said:
Your letters are so wonderful and I just wanted to check in and tell you I enjoy reading them every week! These last two came at the right time for me, as I just finished my third season with Radio City and have now graduated from Marymount (Dance Major, International Relations Minor). I had an amazing offer, last week, to do an internship at the UN, and was recommended by one of my Mentors/Professors at MMC. This offer is rare and an invaluable opportunity to get my foot in the door with International Affairs/Journalism. But my heart still yearns to dance..and before this offer, I was looking forward to a winter/spring of freedom to dance, take yoga/voice lessons and audition for other shows. There is risk with both paths, and last week I was going nuts trying to decide which one was right. But there is no right, or security with either choice and so I followed my heart and decided that now is my time to dance....Rockettes is a dream, but I'd like to try to take my career farther these next few years...so here I go. And your letter was a sign! Thank you so much for communicating to me. The timing and the impact of your letters mean so much to me. Happy Valentine's Day and have a beautiful winter!
Much Love Always,
Elizabeth
It's so hard in our society to separate what we want in our heart vs. what other people would say is an opportunity we can't pass up.
I am so proud of Elizabeth for making her own choice and dedicating herself to following the path that was right for her.
In the newsletter series that Elizabeth referred to in her note, I discuss how to know whether your heart's desire is just a fantasy or fleeting passion vs. a true desire that needs to be fulfilled, and I also discuss what to expect when you follow your heart, i.e. what are the practical realities and potential consequences.
You can read the series here:

If you'd like coaching, please don't hesitate to call me and discuss. Also, I'm looking for six great women to be a part of my new group for women ages 24 - 30. See the details below.
And I'm going to be 31 on Monday! Can you believe it?!?!?!
Have a wonderful weekend!
