1. Are You Changing?
What happens when you have spent most of your adulthood (this could be 5, 10, 20 or more years) seeing yourself one way and striving for something in particular, but now you are finding that maybe you want something different, that maybe what mattered before doesn't matter so much to you anymore?
What if you have worked so hard for something that you really believed in, and you are continuing to work hard but beginning to recognize that you no longer find joy in that thing.
What if there is something you have always wanted, but you've noticed lately that striving for that thing doesn't have the same meaning as it once had?
What if you have always seen yourself as being a certain way, but are finding lately that you don't find satisfaction in playing that role any longer?
We Never Stop Growing
We often go through changes in our different stages of life. When we are a child, we naturally assume we will take on new roles as we grow older - like when we turn 16, then 18, go to college, turn 21, get a job, etc. We expect to become more mature, take on new roles, have new responsibilities, and even be more adventurous.
But once you become an adult, the stages are more ambiguous. You might have always been the life of the party, and now you are finding that you enjoy quiet evenings in. Maybe you have always wanted to travel, but now you are finding that you like the stability of staying in one place. Maybe you have always wanted to be a working artist, but now you want your art to be simply your joy and not a way to make money.
Not the Same as Giving Up
I often talk about going after dreams and passions. Dreams and passions are so important. I really believe that each one of us were created with something inside of us that needs to bud. But we also change overtime. Aspects of what we want become something different, sometimes opposite of who we always thought we were.
This can be a really beautiful thing. The problem is, sometimes we hold onto the old person and miss out on embracing the amazing things change has to offer. Sometimes the change that is beckoning has a whole new world of joy attached to it that we may not have been ready for before this point in our lives. I do not mean letting go of something that is a dream because you are getting lazy or are afraid of failure. This is entirely different.
Does It Symbolize Youth?
The key is to be discerning and to recognize that you desire something new, that you are experiencing a shift. Letting go of who we were yesterday and moving on can be a little scary sometimes. Especially if we identify that part of who we are with youth. But the benefits of growing older is that you gain wisdom and you have more experience and skills to embrace the things you really want.
If you are not sure whether your thought of making a change is actually letting go of a dream you still need to fulfill, or if it truly is a change that will bring more fulfillment to your life, please contact me for a coaching session. These things often become very clear when the right questions are asked and we are being honest with ourselves.
Where is change inviting you? Is there something that it's time for you to let go of?
