1. Focusing on the Negative or the Positive?
Hi everyone! Man! I have had a tough week. You know, one of those weeks when you are working hard and dealing with a tremendous amount of stress and pressure, and on top of it all, it seems like everything is going wrong. Something you needed immediately doesn't work; someone is mad at you; you're running late because the subway stalled in between stops; you get in a fight with your sister, and on and on and on...
If you are like me at all, you might find that you carry all of that heaviness around with you. You think about all of the things that are going wrong, and anything going right falls between the cushions of the couch--in other words, they're out of sight! It seems like you just can't get a break!
Dwelling on the Negative
Sometimes I get in these modes where I start dwelling on the things that aren't working right and the things that haven't worked right. And thinking about them makes me feel bad, sad, angry, or all three. And yet, there can be three times as many circumstances going on in my life that are fantastic, even worth skipping over! But somehow, I forget them.
Well, last night I snapped out of it. I realized that life is far too short to not enjoy the good things because someone is mad at me, or because I did something embarrassing, or because some expectation I had wasn't met. No one knows what tomorrow brings, and most of what we worry over will never make that significant of a difference in our life anyway, and the things that will make a significant difference--well, worrying is not going to make them better, that's for sure.
Making the List
So last night I went home and listed all of the things that are going great in my life. Boy! That felt terrific. And today, I have been CHOOSING to think about those things instead of the things that make me feel bad. And ya know what? My perspective changed. I realized that the things I thought were so bad are not really that bad at all. When I started thinking about the positive things, I saw that I was making the bad things much much bigger than they actually are.
It's amazing how simply training yourself to think differently and choosing what you focus on, really has a tremendous affect on the way you feel throughout the day.
